Blackjack is a casino card game played between dealer and player. The aim is to make a hand as near as possible to 21 but not more. A blackjack itself is when a 2-card hand has a value of 21. A blackjack pays 3 : 2.
Blackjack or 21 has its own jargon like all other specialties. Read this glossary of basic terms.
Basic Strategy
Optimal use of blackjack moves (hit, stand, etc.) that reduce the house advantage to a minimum. Since the house still has an edge, casinos do not frown on this technique unlike card counting.
Burn Card
In blackjack and other card games, the dealer may discard one or more cards after shuffling. This is to prevent cheating or someone accidentally seeing the card(s).
Bust
When a player draws a card and brings their total card score to more than 21. Note that the first two cards dealt to either player or dealer can never be bust. The highest possible 2-card score is 21.
Card Counting
A system of tracking cards as they are dealt. This lets the player know what cards are left in the deck/shoe. When the player knows through card counting that the remaining cards give him or her an edge over the house, the player can adjust their bets accordingly for profit.
Double Down
To double the wager and draw one last card. Usually available only to the player only for the first two cards dealt.
Hard Hand
Any hand that does not qualify as a soft hand.
Heads Up
A blackjack game with only one player against the dealer.
Hit
To obtain a new card.
Hole Card
The second dealer's card dealt face-down.
insurance
If the dealer's up card is an ace, the player can take insurance. This is a side bet up to half their original wager. The wager pays 2 : 1 if it is a blackjack. Basically the side bet is for the dealer getting a blackjack.
Natural
An ace and any 10-valued card. This is a natural hand.
Over/Under
Betting that the player's first two cards will be more than 13 (over) or less than 13 (under), with aces being counted as 1.
Push
A tie, which happens when both dealer and player hands have the same total score.
Shoe
A box for storing the unused portion of decks. Used for multiple decks. When it is a single deck, the dealer usually holds the deck.
Soft Hand
A hand that has an ace on it is considered soft because the ace can have a value of 1 or 11 as needed. In other words, "soft" means flexible or adjustable.
Split
When dealt a pair of cards of same rank, a player may split the cards into two hands. They must also bet again.
Stand
To stay with one's cards and not draw again.
Stiff Hand
A medium-scoring hand that has a slight chance of winning, e.g. 12, 15, 16.
Surrender
A player can surrender their two cards after dealing, in exchange for half of their original bet.
Up Card
The dealer's visible card on first deal.
