Aponte First Blackjack Player in Topps Allen and Ginter Cards

It is not a new thing for baseball or other sports legends to be featured in a trading card but for a blackjack great to be put in a trading card is simply astounding.

On July 31st, 2007, Michael Aponte, the first ever World Series of Blackjack champion, is the first blackjack player to be featured in a Topps Trading Card.

Aponte is part of the 2007 Topps Allen and Ginter set that are available in trading card stores. The Topps Allen and Ginter set features 300 baseball players and 25 well-known personalities all over the world.

The first Allen and Ginter cards were made in 1880's. The cards are a slim 1 ½ inch by 2 ¾ inch lithographs that are sold together with cigarette packs. Aside from baseball stars, the cards also showcase boxers, wrestlers, riflemen, rowers and billiard experts.

Aponte and the other players that are in the set signed the limited number of the 2007 set of cards that will be randomly placed in the six card deck packs. Aponte said that he never dreamed that he will be put into a Topps card.

Aponte is known in the blackjack circuit as the manager of the MIT Blackjack team who won millions of dollars from casinos in the 1990's by using card counting. While card counting is legal, a lot of casinos in the U.S. banned this practice.

By the year 2000, Aponte had become so popular that he cannot play at casinos anymore. In 2004, he joined and won the inaugural World Series of Blackjack (WSOBJ) championship.

A movie based on the story of the MIT Blackjack Team "21", which will be release next year. Aside from Aponte, this year's honorees include Joe Frazier, Bruce Lee, Mia Hamm, Danica Patrick and UCLA basketball coach John Wooden.

In 2006, Aponte finished third in the Ultimate Blackjack Tour's Legends of Blackjack. Aponte co-founded the Blackjack institute which offers step-by-step instruction in the game as well as teaching the next generation of blackjack players.
