Blackjack History

The history of Blackjack is still prevalently debated up to now. The exact origin of blackjack is still in question but many game historians believe that blackjack evolved from other card games. Among the card games believe to be the origin of blackjack is "French Ferme" and "chemin de fer."

During the 18th century, a card game similar to blackjack became famous in French casinos. This card game is called "Vingt-et-un" is French word literally means "twenty-one".

A century after the game of blackjack reaches the American soil for the first time. Blackjack became an instant hit in casinos and card rooms despite of anti gambling policies implemented across the nation. It was in 1933, when gambling was legalized in Nevada. It was followed by other states as years passed. This propelled blackjack to a greater height of popularity. Every casino saw the rise in popularity of blackjack as it brought huge amount of profits. Blackjack tables are always full and patrons kept on coming back to enjoy a game or two.

As a result of this popularity, blackjack strategies were developed. Several books and articles were published to inform the public of some basic strategies and tips to help improve blackjack skills. It all started in 1953 when Roger Baldwin published his article "Optimum Strategy in Blackjack." Six years after, Professor Edward O. Thorp wrote the book "Beat the Dealer," which refined and develop basic blackjack strategies.

Perhaps the most notable blackjack player is John Uston. He brought five other blackjack players with small computers attached to their shoes. At the end of the night, the group won $100,000. After this, Uston was arrested along with his blackjack players. He was later released as FBI expert found that the computers were not used for cheating rather for public information.

Uston's success paved the way for a more scientific approach to playing blackjack. Scientist, Mathematicians and blackjack experts developed more sophisticated blackjack strategies. They did not only study the game but also the blackjack table. With this, Casino owners began loosing profits. As a result, they altered blackjack rules to prevent cheating and card counting. These new rules did not last long as blackjack patrons protested and refused to play at casinos. Owners of casinos have no choice but to bring back old rules and use four, five or eight decks of cards in playing blackjack.

True enough, blackjack has come so far in terms of its history. It has overcome many challenges but still steadily gains popularity. It is easy to conclude that blackjack will continue to remain one of the most favorite card games there is.
